Sunday morning I was awakened by the news of yet another mass shooting in our state. This time, Club Q, an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs, has suffered a horrific attack. Like the rest of Colorado, I was devastated by the news and horrified by the senseless acts of terrorism that claimed so many more lives.

The killer is now charged with murdering five people, taking five people away from their loved ones, and injuring more than 20 people. Additionally, it ravaged her two communities, Colorado Springs and the LGBTQ community. The people of Colorado joined each other in expressing their grief, grief and support for the victims and their families.

gazette reported Learn more about the background of Colorado’s newest mass murderer, formerly known as Nicholas Brink, who changed his name to Anderson Lee Aldrich when he was 15.

“His upbringing was marked by his biological father, who dabbled in drugs and worked in the porn industry, and his mother, who was arrested multiple times in California and Texas, and both parents were arrested when Aldrich was a toddler. Separated,” summarized The Gazette. “Shortly before he changed his name, the suspect was clearly the target of online bullying and was showing signs of fascination with gay culture.”

Last June, Aldrich, then 21, Suspect reportedly In a bomb threat incident in which he “was in possession of multiple weapons while threatening to blow his house into ‘holy hell’,” the incident was apparently live-streamed on his mother’s Facebook page, with body armor and He was seen wearing a helmet.

His mother reported the threats to law enforcement, the Gazette reported, adding, “Her son threatened him with a homemade bomb and several weapons and ammunition from inside the house seen in the video.” claimed. The suspect was charged with his two counts of felony threats and his three counts of first-degree kidnapping, but no formal charges were filed in the case.

Under relatively new state law, the case was automatically closed. for example“These sealed records prevent the media and government agencies from scrutinizing who was arrested, the number and targets of the arrests, or whether there were any nefarious reasons for the lack of convictions, and why.” I have.”

moreover, Colorado has red flag lawsThe 2021 incident Aldrich claims seems to be one example that might have been worthwhile. But it was apparently never used.

Here, too, existing laws are barriers to information or are not used. why not?

What we currently know about Aldrich adds even more to the story. I see adults who have experienced It can be concluded that there was a coalescence of significant mental health issues and multi-layered behavioral failures that led to Saturday’s brutality.

To be clear, men are responsible for their actions. Aldrich, and only Aldrich, is responsible for unspeakable evil. Still, what we’ve learned about his background and possible missteps along the way is instructive. It also emphasizes the importance of mental health treatment.

The latter point seems especially important on holidays.

A quick look at Twitter on Sunday, when we first saw the news of Club Q, made us aware of another depressing loss. Mixed marriage artist and actor Jason David Frank (JDF), best known for playing Tommy Oliver in “Power Rangers,” died the night before. It was confirmed that He leaves behind his four children.

As the original Green and White Rangers, Tommy was my favorite Ranger and childhood icon of the 1990s. He has returned to the series multiple times in future incarnations to promote the Power Rangers online and at events.

For many people, the holidays are a difficult and emotionally challenging time. Two years ago, I shared my struggles with depression and suicide publicly for the first time. The 2020 CoPo Columntalked about my own experience.

Needless to say, I have been in treatment for clinical depression and anxiety for over 7 years. Meanwhile, on December 31, 2013, I was on the verge of committing suicide. Luckily, my family supported me when it came to calling the police in a mental health emergency.

“I never expected this to be one of the best things to happen to me, but it set a new course in my therapy. It was the most intense and harrowing night of my life,” I wrote. Every New Year is a bittersweet reminder.

Fortunately, as my life from that fateful night shows, there is a way forward. There are many treatments and services available for those in need as well as those in a position to help. Violence against yourself or others is not the answer. truth and love.
