Bar Council moves HC against decision to register Korean nationals as lawyers
The Bar Council of India (BCI) has moved the Delhi High Court challenging an earlier judgment that allowed a Korean to register as an advocate. BCI argued that foreign lawyers are not allowed to practice in Indian courts and that allowing them would set a precedent for lawyers from other countries such as Pakistan and Nepal to enter India. However, the high court said that if Indians can practice in South Korea, Korean nationals who have obtained law degrees from Indian institutions should also be allowed to practice.
Russia calls for new Security Council meeting on Gaza war
Russia plans to reconvene the UN Security Council to discuss the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the conflict between Israel and Hamas. The ceasefire resolution at the previous meeting was rejected due to opposition from four members, including the United States. Russia’s deputy U.N. envoy, Dmitry Polyansky, said he would convene a new meeting, but did not specify a date. Russia has been pushing for talks to end the conflict as it affects relations with Iran and Israel. The conflict resulted in numerous casualties on both sides.
Police officer arrested for forging medical certificate
Panaji police constable Nitesh Chodankar has been arrested for allegedly forging a medical certificate to obtain sick leave. The certificate was sent for verification, but it turned out to be fake. The constable presented the documents as genuine and deceived the authorities and resumed his duties. The police officer produced false medical certificates six times in one year.
