Dearborn, Michigan (FOX 2) – One dead after seven-hour standoff between Dearborn police and gunmen The man who built the barricade inside the Hampton Inn on Michigan Avenue on Thursday.
The standoff ended at 8:30 p.m. as police crisis negotiators were able to apprehend the armed 38-year-old suspect – who is said to have a history of mental illness and substance abuse -. Surrender peacefully. Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said the victim was a hotel clerk.
“Before we arrived, there was a shooting and there was a death. The person was taken to a hospital and found dead,” Shahin said. “The victim is a 55-year-old from Riverview who was trying to get a job,” Shahin said. “My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. It is tragic.”
Shahin said the shooting was sparked by a dispute over a bill on the third floor of the hotel and the shooter was seeking a refund.
“…the suspect has a history of mental illness and substance abuse,” the chief said. “In the nearly nine months I’ve been Chief, all too often we find ourselves in situations where people suffer from mental illness armed with firearms, and the results are often tragic.
“There is a broader problem here than what is happening in the city of Dearborn: a combination of mental illness and access to firearms.”
The suspect did not open fire on the officer with his weapon, but pointed a long gun at him and threatened police. Police said it was unclear whether the suspect was a legal firearms owner.
“It was when he crouched in his room when there was a team of police officers who responded and they were going up the corridor to make contact with him,” Shahin said.
FOX 2 has obtained cell phone video of police negotiating with the culprit and trying to get the suspect to appear.
“Sir, go out into the corridor so we can meet you,” said the officer. “Let’s look at your hands first, then let’s go outside. Teacher, let’s look at your hands. Look at your hands. Look at your hands. We just want to talk.” I just want this to end peacefully. Please get it.Help me, man.”
At one point, Dearborn firefighters broke a window and rescued civilians from inside the hotel. No other injuries were reported to civilians or police, he added.
Shahin praised the “untiring efforts” of the crisis negotiators who worked hours on the phone to achieve surrender.
“I am proud of these officers and I am proud of this community,” he said. I did my best to.”
Dear Mayor Abdullah Hammoud thanked the police for their response and asked for prayers for all concerned.
“Please pray for our police, first responders, families of victims, and suspects,” he said. I know what’s ahead.”
