Udupi, July 16: Divine Fitness, a co-ed gym, opened in Shankar Building on July 14th.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the gym was performed by Wilson Fernandes’ wife Leena Fernandes. Other attendees at the ceremony included Father Vijay Joyson D’Souza, principal of St. Mary’s English Medium School in Kannarpadi, Udupi; former state assemblyman K. Raghupathi Bhatt; former directors of the Coastal Development Authority, Matar Ratnakar Hegde; K.P. Jagadish Adhikari; retired DYSP Valentine D’Souza; and Karnile Vishwanath Shetty.
Fr Vijay Joyson D’Souza, assistant parish priest of Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi, blessed the gym with prayers and holy water. He said, “I am happy to have this opportunity. After the COVID-19 outbreak, we have become more conscious about our health. My heartfelt prayers go out to all the gym members.”
Highlighting the need for a gym in Udupi, bodybuilder and former DySP from Karwar Valentine D’Souza said, “My gym journey started here in Udupi. There was a need for a good gym in the heart of Udupi city and Wilson has made it happen.”
D’Souza also expressed concern about the habits of today’s youth and said, “Young people these days are starting to pick up bad habits. Gyms are needed to help them get out of such habits. I hope they will make use of gyms. There are many benefits to going to the gym. Exercising every day will keep you young forever. Some hospitals also have gyms for muscle building and bone strengthening. There is no age limit to start working out at the gym. After a break, I have started working out again.”
Matar Ratnakar Hegde, a former Karnataka Coastal Development Authority employee and activist, highlighted the role of exercise in fighting depression. He said, “In this mechanical life where we are consumed by technology and machines, it is important to take care of one’s health. Today, everyone is busy using technology for various purposes, which leads to depression. To get out of it, people start taking medicines. Exercise is the best solution to this.”
Hegde praised Wilson Fernandes and said, “Mr Fernandes is a successful businessman. He has created jobs for people across the world. I wish him all the best.”
Karnile Vishwanath Shetty, Vice President of the World Gymnastics Federation, praised Wilson Fernandes for his entrepreneurial success and contribution to job creation, and highlighted the role of gyms in promoting fitness.
BJP leader KP Jagadish Adhikari shared his experience of improving his health through exercise, particularly managing his lung disease. “Health is the greatest asset we have been given. I wish the gym and the organisation all the success in the future,” he said.
Mr Wilson Fernandes, Managing Director of Divine Fitness Unisex Gym welcomed the participants. Ms Ida Fernandes, Manager of Fernandes Group Chemannu Branch delivered the vote of thanks. Mr Stephen Colaco acted as Master of Ceremonies.
