poulet
Community members learned over the weekend (and Chronicle had its first story) Berkeley’s longtime favorite restaurant, Poulet, will close permanently this Friday, July 14th, after 43 years in business. The reason for the closure has not yet been revealed.
Known for its comforting, rustic, French- and European-influenced side dishes that feature poultry and seasonal vegetables, Poulet had more of a friendly deli feel than a restaurant, but this North Berkeley-style restaurant is the place to go. The store somehow blended in with the community gathering place. As much as a simple takeaway counter. People were relaxing in the sunny dining areas and on the outdoor benches, rejuvenating themselves and socializing with their neighbors.
Poulet and Marilyn Rinzler, a single mother who dreamed of providing people with healthy, delicious, and easy options for those nights when she didn’t feel like cooking, and Berkeley gourmet chef who now writes, edits, and at Yes. Founded in 1979 by the famous Bruce Eidels. , sausage. Rinzler owned and operated Poulet for 33 years before selling it to brothers Jesse Savell and chef Casey Savell in 2018. The brothers brilliantly kept many of the recipes and most of the format intact, even during the pandemic, when take-out meals were nourishing and comforting for many.
“I won’t go into the details here, but let me just say that this was not an easy decision,” said an email sent to Poulet patrons on Saturday. “We are so happy to share our cuisine with this community we know and love. I can’t thank you enough and I really hope to meet you all.”
For now, Nosh joins the entire North Berkeley and East Bay to pay tribute to this cherished old-timer. I will share when I know more.
Poulet is located at 1685 Shattuck Ave. in Berkeley and closes after Bastille Day services on Friday, July 14th.
