Good Law Project’s lawsuit against GambleAware dismissed by Charity Commission
Good Law Project Celebrated In May, the Gambling Commission launched an investigation into the charity GambleAware at its request. Jolyon’s team launched their attack because the charity is partly funded by the gambling industry (as usual) and because it campaigns for adult self-restraint rather than a complete shutdown of the industry.
“GambleAware has run an extensive advertising campaign which experts say ‘suggests that gamblers are a special category of people who are personally responsible for their losses’ and reflects ‘a discourse promoted by the gambling industry which seeks to shift the blame for gambling-related harm from an aggressively promoted harmful product onto individual gamblers.’ Instead of helping people stop gambling, the charity blames the very people it should be helping and advises them to gamble ‘responsibly.'”
Apparently that means they’re “breaching the charity law” by “not achieving their charitable purpose” of helping people with gambling problems. Predictably, the Charity Commission acted pretty swiftly. Open and close Case:
“We have received the necessary assurances that the Board is dealing with matters as expected, including taking appropriate steps to ensure independence from the gambling industry. The Board has satisfied the Commission that it has appropriate procedures in place to ensure its objectives are met.”
