T.Through our 50 Over 50 initiative and ForbesWomen’s general coverage, we appreciate how ageism manifests itself in the workplace, and the contributions of entrepreneurs and employees with decades of experience. We often talk about why it is so important to do. (In fact, some of the most productive members of America’s workforce are over the age of 55.)

But new research from the Harvard Business Review is a reminder that women face ageism at all ages, whether they’re under 30, over 50, or anywhere in between. In this study, a woman who appeared to be 40 or under 40 reported not believing her pet’s name, role, and even having her head stroked. (Yes, that’s right. A 39-year-old woman reported: was patted on the head at work.) Women between the ages of 40 and 60 (which may seem like the ‘sweet spot’ in terms of experience) have never had it this easy. Women in this group reported facing stigma in hiring and promotion due to assumptions about menopausal symptoms and family caregiving responsibilities.

As forbes Contributor Shelly Acheson points out that the current reality is that there is no “right” age for women in the workplace, but we shouldn’t settle for that status quo. “By speaking out about this and tackling gender-based ageism cautiously, we can work to create a better and more inclusive workplace,” Acheson said. “For everyone.”

cheers!
