A fitness influencer died after being hit by a barbell while trying to do a 210kg squat press.
Justin Vicky, 33, died shortly after a freak accident on July 15 while doing strength training at Paradise Bali Gym in Sanur.
The bodybuilder, nutrition advisor and personal trainer has 30,000 followers on Instagram.
After the accident, Justin broke his neck and was rushed to a local hospital with pressure on a vital nerve to his heart and lungs.
Despite the best efforts of the surgeons to save his life, he died shortly after emergency surgery.
Justin, from East Java, Indonesia, struggled to stay upright as he tried to stretch his legs as the heavy bar weighed heavily on his shoulders.
When Justin fell to the floor and a pile of barbells slammed into the back of his neck, the only lifeguard behind him was completely helpless.
Fitness gurus close to Justin took to social media to pay tribute to Justin’s “dear friend” after the accident.
“Vicky was a good person, polite and sociable,” writes Gede Stariya. He was always willing to share his knowledge about Jim. He also advised his gym friends to be cautious while training and not to exceed their capabilities.
“Only I can measure my own abilities. May Mas Vicki rest in peace in the embrace of God and find his rightful place.”
Paradise Bali Gym later took to social media to pay tribute, saying, “Dear Justin, the impact you have had on our lives is immeasurable.”
“Your legacy will live on through the countless lives you touched, the changes you inspired, and the love and passion you put into every moment we spent together.
“Rest in peace, dear friend. You will forever be in our hearts.
Another friend commented, “He was always full of positivity and kept me motivated.”
“I will never forget his impact on my fitness journey. A disappointing loss, but we intend to keep his spirit alive.”
