In fiction, nerds and gamers are often depicted in two extremes: either a big guy sprawled on the couch munching on burgers, or a skinny guy with long hair and big glasses. Unfortunately, I’m the kind of guy who likes to lie around all day munching on snacks. You can imagine what that does to my figure. But for all my fellow nerds and gamers who can’t be bothered to insert their joycons into the Ring Fit rings every day, don’t worry! Hatsune Miku and her vocaloid friends are here to get you in shape with some fitness boxing. Fitness Boxing feat. Hatsune Mikuand she’s ready to throw up her hands.
First, when you start the game, you’ll notice that all the Vocaloids are speaking in their native Japanese. However, the instructor leading the exercises speaks in English. It’s a bit jarring for me to hear a Vocaloid voice talking to me in Japanese, then Rin carefully enunciating every note and telling me (in English) to straighten up. It didn’t take me long to ignore it during the exercises, but it was a bit distracting on the first day.
Fitness Boxing feat. Hatsune Miku It’s exactly what it sounds like. The instructor will tell you what to do and remind you of the correct form. Meanwhile, your chosen Vocaloid will box alongside you, offering words of encouragement. It’s gentle even if you mess up a combo, and the positive vibes make it easy to keep doing it every day. Miku Exercise is a mode where you box to Vocaloid songs. I’m a fan of this selection, which features classics from “Melt” to “Vampire.” Other favorites include “Melancholic,” “World End Dancehall,” and “Romeo and Cinderella.” I hope to see more songs and Vocaloid partners in future downloadable content.

Of course, if you’re confident in your skills, you can also go straight to the Miku exercises and skip all the combo lessons.
When I first started fitness boxing, Ring FitI felt like I was getting more out of my training thanks to the physical use of the ring and the variety of exercises I could do in the game. But as I continued on my fitness boxing journey, certain stretches and movements became easier than when I first started. It felt great. I don’t know why I don’t get that satisfying tiredness I always felt after yoga or boxing. Ring FitBut my daily training will probably need to be a lot longer than 30-40 minutes per session.
I threw away my scale for mental health reasons so I don’t know what the impact is. Fitness Boxing feat. Hatsune Miku How will this affect my weight and waistline? feel Better! Ring FitIt’s so much easier to start up, so I’m less tempted to get lazy and skip a day or two. This is the end of the review, but my fitness journey is just beginning.

Food for thought
- The game is about exercise, not Vocaloid, so even people who are unfamiliar with Hatsune Miku can enjoy it.
- You have to slowly unlock songs and characters, but the good ones are easy to come by so it doesn’t feel unnecessarily tedious.
- I nearly threw my Joy-Con at the TV while punching it, so if you’re the clumsy type (like me), I recommend listening to the game and playing with a wrist strap.
