Mission, Texas (valley central) — Police departments across Texas will receive several boxes of Narcan to help fight the ongoing opioid crisis.
Mission Police Department officers say Narcan is a life-saving tool and this distribution will help many people, especially in the fight against the opioid crisis.
“We have a growing fentanyl problem here in the United States, and the City of Mission is unacceptable,” said Assistant Police Chief Teodoro Rodriguez.
Mission police say officers have seized about 204 pounds of fentanyl over the past year, and Mission police officers have used Narcan in seven cases so far.
“Here in Mission City, we’re very proactive and always ahead of the curve and we see trends coming. One of the things we want to do is we want to engage with the community. That’s true,” Rodriguez said.
Police said they are working with the city and local drug enforcement agencies to keep residents in the area aware of what to watch out for.
“While our goal as public safety is to keep everyone safe, we go a little beyond that by educating our community on the importance of being aware of drug use habits and making sure We want to make a positive impact and be here with our community,” Rodriguez said.
Bobbi Muniz, a pharmacist at Rio Grande Pharmacy and Medical Devices, said Narcan should be a life-saving measure for all first responders.
“Reversing drug opioid overdoses is critical; it’s a matter of life and death,” Muniz said.
Nasal Narcan can be purchased over the counter, Muniz said. He says it’s important to take action when it comes to the overdose and fentanyl crisis.
“If there is an overdose, please call 911. So we keep it on hand for first responders to respond and use right away,” Muniz said. Ta.
It’s unclear how many Narcan cases Mission police receive.
But that depends on the county’s population, according to Gov. Greg Abbott’s office.
Narcan will also be distributed to school district police and universities.
