Hartford, Connecticut (WFSB) – Increased federal funding for major food programs has been announced.
The Supplemental Nutrition Insurance Program (SNAP), and children’s nutrition programs, are said to be getting a big boost.
A press conference with Senator Richard Blumenthal and his supporters was held in Hartford on Monday at 11am.
Children’s nutrition programs include school feeding programs.
Blumenthal said many Connecticut families face food insecurity in the winter.
The federal budget includes $154 billion for SNAP, an increase of $13.4 billion from last year; $28.5 billion for children’s nutrition programs, including historic funding to help schools provide healthy meals; He said $6 billion was included in special supplemental nutrition programs for infants. Connecticut’s SNAP and children’s nutrition programs were expected to receive millions of dollars in boosts to support access to affordable, nutritious food.
Blumenthal, citing Feeding America, says nearly 400,000 people in Connecticut are facing hunger, which equates to 1 in 10 residents. Nearly one in her eight of her children is food insecure.
