The Food and Drug Administration warned consumers not to purchase or use two brands of eye drops found to be contaminated with bacteria, fungi, or both.
Upon testing, Dr. Berne’s MSM Drops 5% Solution and LightEyez MSM Eye Drops – Eye Repair were found to be microbially contaminated, sterile, and unsafe to use.
These products, sold online by retailers such as Amazon, contained the illegal FDA-unapproved chemical methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). This substance is naturally present in humans and certain plants and animals. When used as an eye drop, it is said to promote nutrient absorption and eye circulation.
The FDA is not aware of any adverse events associated with any of these products, but the FDA advised that patients with symptoms of eye infections should consult their healthcare providers immediately.
Dr. Byrne has agreed to a voluntary recall of its products. Meanwhile, the FDA is awaiting a response from LightEyez regarding their concerns.
Dr. Berene’s MSM Drops 5% solution was found to be contaminated with the bacterium bacillus and the fungus exophiala.
