FDA says it’s seized ‘thousands of units’ of counterfeit Ozempic

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned Thursday that it has seized “thousands” of counterfeit versions of the type 2 diabetes drug Ozempic in the U.S. drug supply chain, urging suppliers, pharmacies and patients to be careful. Five people have become ill in connection with the product, none of which were serious. the FDA said.

The FDA is warning pharmacies, health systems, wholesalers and patients to double check their prescriptions. Semaglutide Make sure the product is authentic. Do not use the 1-milligram injectable Ozempic product that has lot number NAR0074 and serial number 430834149057 on the box.

The agency and pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk are testing counterfeit products to determine whether they are dangerous and to determine what the substance is. The FDA said the pen's label, carton, information for patients and health care professionals, and the needle included with the syringe were also counterfeit. The sterility of the needle cannot be verified and its use may cause infection.

The FDA cautioned patients to obtain the drug only through state-licensed pharmacies with a valid prescription.

Ozempic has been in short supply ever since it became popular among celebrities who use it for weight loss. Since Ozempic and its sister drug Wegovy became popular, there have been reports of people selling counterfeit products in salons and through social media.

Separately, the FDA also send a letter Warn online sellers to stop selling copy products. Novo Nordisk has filed a lawsuit to prevent medical spas, medical clinics and weight loss clinics from selling counterfeit products.

The FDA said it is working with other federal agencies and Novo Nordisk to remove additional counterfeit semaglutide injectable products.
