The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has begun safe disposal of a significant amount of unregistered, high-strength opioid drugs that have been illegally imported into Ghana.
The destruction exercise follows a court order protected by the FDA after the drug was seized during a joint testing operation conducted on March 14, 2025.
The operation involved the Ghana Revenue Agency (GRA) Customs Department, the Drug Management Board (NACOC), National Security, National Intelligence Agency (NIB), and the Ghana Port Authority (GPHA).

According to the FDA, the seized drugs include:
- 26 cartons Rahol Tapentadol (250mg)
- 160 cartons Tafradol Tapentadol (120mg)
- 40 cartons Timaking Tapentadol (120mg)
- 4 cartons Timaking Tapentadol (250mg)
Tapentadol is a powerful opioid used to manage severe pain, and its unregulated imports raise major public health and safety concerns.
In a Facebook post Friday, authorities said, “The FDA is safely disposing of the large-scale transport of unregistered, high-strength opioids that have been illegally imported into the country…”
Officials say the move is part of a broader effort to crack down on illegal drug trafficking. Protects public health in Ghana.
