The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved the first gel-based treatment to stop moderate to severe bleeding, a new product that could potentially prevent deaths from blood loss after a gunshot or stab wound.
Cresilon’s Trauma Gel is the first plant-based gel designed to stop and control life-threatening bleeding in seconds, meeting the needs of military forces, government health agencies and emergency medical services, the company said. press release.
“The ability to quickly stop bleeding and stop life-threatening bleeding at the point of care can mean the difference between life and death for people suffering from traumatic injuries,” Cresilon co-founder and CEO Joe Landolina said in a statement.
TraumaGel is expected to be available in late 2024 and will be delivered in an easy-to-use 30ml prefilled syringe. Cresilon currently operates out of a 33,000 square foot biomanufacturing facility in Brooklyn.
The FDA approved a 5ml version of the product last year for use on minor cuts and wounds, and the company’s gel is also used by veterinarians.
Cresilon said current methods of treating severe bleeding, such as gauze bandages, are not efficient because they require preparation and long application times.
Conversely, Trauma Gel allows blood clots to form without the need for pressure on the wound.
“This (trauma gel) is useful for stab wounds, gunshot wounds, car accidents – any situation where this product could be the difference between a patient and death,” said Landolina, who invented the gel when he was 17. He told Reuters..
