Anxiety about toilet emergencies
We’ve been writing a lot lately about the anxiety of bathroom emergencies, and we’ve had some responses from our readers.
Our cartoon about the challenge of finding a public restroom received over 1,000 comments. We heard from readers who felt their need for bathroom access became more urgent due to various medical issues.
“I think it would be great if there were more public restrooms in America. In theory this is a human rights issue, but in reality the biggest problem with public restrooms in America is the majority of Americans.” — drone attack
“It’s hard to imagine that in most American cities, it would be so hard to find a place to go, let alone a safe and clean one.” — new jersey connecticut
“Great job educating the public and law makers about public health, the human right to the toilet!” — Jill Christianson
“Thank you!!! I have an overactive bladder and have to plan every step of my trip. Having lived in London, I’ve lived in the city center and along tube lines that I use frequently. I knew all the public restrooms. When I first visited New York, I hated it. I spent most of my time worrying about not being able to find it. I love camping, but… You have to go several times a night. And for women it’s not so simple.” Concerned citizens_320_M
Not everyone was sympathetic.
“I run a retail store and once my bathroom at home was open to the public. This was until my bathroom was used for drug dealing and injections. We had to cancel the parade because people were going in and out of stores to buy and sell. — James Kraskoukas
“While I sympathize with people who find themselves in a situation where they need to go to the bathroom in an emergency, I strongly oppose forcing companies to open employee-only bathrooms to customers. Employee bathrooms are usually equipped with anti-theft devices. , in the back room area where there is inventory that has not yet been tagged, such as employee shelving, lockers, coat racks, etc. Also, there is always the danger that a customer will make a terrible mess and not clean it. Is difficult.” — Reg Morgan
This summer, hundreds of readers responded to our Ask a Doctor column about bowel incontinence. Physician Trisha Pasricha noted that it’s more common than you think, affecting about 8 percent of U.S. adults. Increasing fiber in the diet may help, she wrote.

Find your fat burning zone
It may sound scary, but finding the pace at which your body burns the most fat is probably easier than you think.
There are many good reasons to want to find your fat-burning zone, but they have little to do with weight loss or appearance, writes Gretchen Reynolds. Adipose tissue can have undesirable effects on metabolism, even in people of normal weight. Fat cells often release substances associated with inflammation and insulin dysfunction, which lead to diabetes, heart disease and other conditions, some experts say.
Whether you primarily burn fat or carbohydrates during exercise is determined primarily by the intensity of your workout. As a general rule of thumb, the harder you work, the more your body becomes dependent on carbohydrates.
What may come as a surprise to some is that the lighter your workout, the more fat your body uses for fuel, and easier exercises are the key to getting into the fat-burning zone.

Why is breast self-examination no longer recommended?
This week, a reader asked why doctors don’t recommend breast self-exams. Many readers may be surprised to learn that this test is not considered a means to reduce breast cancer mortality. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take action if you notice changes in your breasts.
“It’s important to be aware of important breast changes that people may notice in their daily lives, such as when showering, shaving, applying deodorant, or putting on a bra. ”Paslisha wrote. “About one in five breast cancer survivors report discovering their breast cancer ‘accidentally’ in this way. ”
