OVERLAND, Mo. – The family of a 5-year-old child wants to know what happened at the school that sent him to the hospital and required resuscitation with Narcan, the drug used to treat heroin overdoses.

The incident occurred on April 26th during a class at Marion Elementary School in Overland.

The family’s lawyer is ben tobin“He was going to die from an opioid overdose within minutes.”

Tobin entered the Ritenour School District headquarters Friday with the victim’s mother and grandmother, whose identities were not released in favor of the child.

“We’re trying to get answers here. I’m trying to help them get these answers,” Tobin added.

He said the family dropped off their children at school at 8:30 that morning without any problems. Three hours and 22 minutes later, an emergency call was reported. The Community Fire Protection District confirmed to FOX 2 that the 5-year-old was transported from Marion Elementary School to Mercy Hospital on April 26 at 11:42 a.m.

“They said he was unconscious and unresponsive until they got to the hospital … and he was injected with Narcan, which is a life-saving measure in this case,” Tobin said.

Narcan is an emergency drug that quickly reverses the effects of opioids. The child made an uneventful recovery and was discharged from the hospital.

FOX 2 spoke with the district’s superintendent, who said the district is committed to getting to the bottom of this matter. He added that the school district called the child safety hotline, police were involved and the family was alerted with the following statement: Part of the message read, “There was a report that an elementary school student became ill after ingesting an unknown substance or an item believed to be candy, but it was believed to be candy.” It may be contaminated with an unknown drug. Although the students fell ill at the time, we are relieved to report that they have recovered safely. ”

“They’re saying right now they don’t know where my client got these opioids from,” Tobin said.

The superintendent told us that he could not confirm what type of drugs were involved, but that he was hopeful that testing and further investigation would provide answers.
