CARMEL, Ind. – The Attorney General’s Office and the Medical Licensing Board are investigating a Carmel-based holistic doctor for violating several state laws, including advertising treatments in a “false or misleading manner.” .

On May 11, 2023, the Attorney General’s Office filed an administrative complaint with the Medical Licensing Board against Dr. Clifford Fetters, owner of the Carmel holistic medical practice Health & Wellness.

Josh Defons, media director for the attorney general’s office, said in an email statement:

“In short, following an OAG investigation into consumer complaints filed against Dr. Fetters, the state filed an administrative complaint with the Medical Licensing Board. The parties are currently engaged in discovery, and in May A public hearing will be set for the board meeting.”

This was announced after investigating multiple complaints from consumers and concluding that Fetters was misleadingly promoting alternative treatments for several diseases, including cancer. . The Better Business Bureau has warned against this practice for several years, giving it its lowest rating.

“When you have a claim about the performance or outcome of something, it should be supported by reliable evidence,” explained Jennifer Adamany, communications director for BBB Services Central Indiana. “We asked them to provide evidence of their claims, but they chose not to provide it.”

One complaint reads:

“Every time we visited Dr. Fetters, he added new supplements that could only be purchased through him. They took advantage of us and scammed us out of thousands of dollars.”

Three other charges have also been filed on behalf of loved ones who sought treatment from Fetters, one only after Fetters gave his father an additional $12,000 for supplements. He said it promised to increase the chances of survival by 30%.

“When you’re dealing with health or illness, especially if it’s a terminal illness, it’s a very emotional situation,” Adaman added. “I certainly want answers and results to get me out of that situation.”

That’s why it’s important for consumers to do research and get multiple opinions when choosing a health care provider, Adaman said.

“Are they licensed? By whom? What does that license mean? We need to research treatments and be on the lookout for miraculous results,” Adaman said. said.

On his practice’s website, Dr. Fetters describes his goal as putting clients on the “path to ultimate health without prescription drugs.”

FOX59/CBS4 reached out to Carmel Health & Wellness. Administrative Operations Manager Tawny Nungester responded with the following statement:

“We are working professionally on this matter with the Attorney General and the Medical Board and are confident it will be resolved in a favorable manner. There are no further announcements to be made at this time.”

The Attorney General’s Office has asked the Medical Licensing Board to impose disciplinary action and require Dr. Clifford Fetters to pay all costs associated with prosecuting this case.
