Expert shares how to stay mentally healthy while working on New Year’s resolutions

by Universalwellnesssystems

New year, new me. It is a timeless mantra used to start the new year.

Many adults in the United States celebrate this occasion by setting goals like reading more books or going to the gym to exercise. Channel 11 News interviewed clinical experts who shared tips on how to stay on track in 2025.

Recent data shows that a significant portion of adults, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, are actively working on making New Year’s resolutions for the coming year. Around two-thirds of these young people are expected to spend time planning their New Year’s goals today.

“I like to think of New Year’s resolutions as more of a check-in than a strict obligation,” said Channing Moreland, Ph.D., founder of Moreland Counseling and Consulting Group.

Moreland said the best way to stay on track is to first understand that failure is possible.

“What I encourage you to do is accept that when you change your life, you may make mistakes, and that’s okay,” Moreland says.

Moreland also suggested identifying a support team to hold you accountable and discuss your journey.

“As we move into the new year, it can be helpful to seek support, whether it’s seeking therapy or asking a loved one for advice,” she said.

For those unfamiliar with therapy, Moreland suggested starting by contacting your insurance company and seeing if your job provides any services.

“You can flip your insurance card over and call the number on the back of your insurance card or take advantage of our employee assistance program. Dial 2-1-1 and there are many resources available to you.” said Moreland.

Recent data shows most adults set goals to become financially stable and physically healthier, but Moreland recommends taking care of your mental health as well.

“It’s thoughts, emotions, and actions. So if we can control our thoughts, it’s beneficial to us,” she explained.

Moreland recommends always giving yourself grace.

“Be kind to yourself and give yourself grace. Life is tough, we have challenges, we always show our best selves, and when you decide on your goals and make plans. We don’t necessarily incorporate that into the,” Moreland said.
