CHARLOTTE — Five officers fired last week from the Memphis Police Department have been charged with murder and other charges in the death of 29-year-old Tire Nichols earlier this month.
Before police footage showing Nichols’ beating was released, the Memphis police chief said the footage was inhumane. Nichols’ family compared the footage to Los Angeles police beating Rodney King.
Of course, whenever we see or hear police brutality, it can take a toll on our mental health, Almiya White of Channel 9 told Mental Health America’s America Paredes . Even before the video was released, she said many may have already been traumatized.
“It’s also important to think about the current impact, even before body cam images are released,” said Paredes. “In many ways, we have already relived many of the issues that occurred during the murder of George Floyd in 2020, and with it have and continue to exist throughout our community. I am reliving a lot of trauma.”
As many prepare for the release of body camera footage, psychologist Cortoni Alston recommended doing a temperature check on how you’re feeling.
“The police have already made the public aware of the importance of this video. are often shared with individuals.
Once this video is released, Paredes said she will have to take additional steps to deal with her trauma.
“I think a lot of people feel that way when they have to cry because it’s hard to understand why when you see someone being brutalized unless it’s heartbreaking,” she said. said.
“Any mental health screening or mental health test you can take will automatically provide guidance on what you may be experiencing,” she added.
Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings said he was preparing for the release of the video. He said he supported the Memphis Police Chief’s decision to fire the officers involved.
“I share the anger and outrage that comes from this tragedy. As we continue to improve police and community relations, there is always work to be done. We must evolve and do better.” We have to work hard,” Jennings said.
Jennings said he and the department are closely monitoring events in Memphis.
