As a further step forward in supporting work-life balance, UC will significantly expand access to paid sick leave starting January 1, 2025.
The revised leave policy for UC staff and academic associates is as follows:
- Expanding paid sick leave eligibility, including allowing part-time employees to access paid sick leave
- Expanding the reasons why employees can use paid sick leave
- Offering “protected” paid sick leave so that employees have the right to take time off for qualifying reasons
- Extend the period during which employees can reinstate paid sick leave if they are rehired after leaving a job
UC also plans to expand paid leave options for sick leave purposes for represented and academically appointed employees, subject to applicable collective bargaining requirements.

Expanded paid sick leave provides increased safety and security for UC’s valued employees, both full-time and part-time. Increased wages, family-friendly benefits and expanded leave policies help UC continue to grow as a great place to work.
More details are expected to be shared ahead of the January 1, 2025, effective date.
