MONTGOMERY, Alabama (WSFA) – There is a new national campaign calling for better mental health policies across the nation. In Alabama, a handful of elected leaders and candidates signed. Mental Health Now Campaignconfirms support for this movement.
A campaign started by a mental health organization inseparablewas founded by Alabama native Bill Smith.
“We all have mental health, and it’s an issue that affects our entire family,” Smith said. We started with a simple premise.”
The organization advocates for more mental health policies starting with elected officials.
- Increase availability of mental health care
- Promote wellness and early intervention
- Improve crisis response for everyone experiencing a mental health emergency
Rep. Charlotte Meadows said, “The son of a family member who had a mental health crisis was about 33 years old, probably the same age as my children.
During a ride with the local police department, Meadows explained that many law enforcement problems stem from mental health problems, and that legislators are working to improve them. He said he was aware that
“The last few years have seen a significant increase in mental health awareness with the enactment of mental health counseling legislation and the confirmation that every school and school system has a mental health coordinator,” Meadows said. .
And with the midterm elections less than a month away, the creators of the campaign are calling for a conversation between politicians and the public to show that mental health is a bipartisan issue that everyone can agree on. says it’s starting.
