Scientists say they are packed with nutrients and can be part of a healthy diet if portioned correctly.
A new study claims that potatoes may be the key to helping people lose weight.
Previously, vegetables were associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and people with insulin resistance were warned against consuming them.
New research suggests this may not be true.
Scientists say they are packed with nutrients and can be part of a healthy diet if portioned correctly.
US researchers recruited 36 overweight, obese, or insulin-resistant people between the ages of 18 and 60.
Insulin resistance is a condition in which muscle, fat, and liver cells become less responsive to insulin and cannot readily take up glucose from the blood.
Participants were fed a diet consisting of beans, peas, meat or fish, or white potatoes and meat or fish.
Both diets replaced an estimated 40% of average meat consumption with beans, peas, or potatoes.
Vegetables were brought into meals such as shepherd’s pie, or served as a side to mash, wedges, and salads.
They found that the results of diets that included potatoes were as healthy as anything else.
Co-investigator Professor Candida Revello of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana said:
They found that certain amounts of food made people feel full, regardless of the number of calories.
Scientists have suggested that having potatoes in your plate, as opposed to high-calorie foods, can ultimately help you lose weight.
Professor Rebello adds:
“You can easily reduce the number of calories you consume by eating foods that are low in calories and heavy in weight.
“An important aspect of our study was that the inclusion of potatoes reduced the calorie content, rather than reducing the portion size of the diet.
“Each participant’s diet was tailored to their individual calorie needs, but substituting some of the meat with potatoes helped the participants feel fuller and finish eating faster. , often I couldn’t even finish my meal.In fact, you can lose weight with very little effort.”
