Douglas County confirms positive case of tuberculosis disease at local YMCA

The Douglas County Health Department has confirmed an active case of tuberculosis at a local YMCA. The health department is investigating his more than 500 possible infections that may have occurred at his day care, the Westview YMCA drop-in near 156th Street and Summit Plaza. The possible infections may have occurred between late spring and late October, and DCHD will continue to investigate the patient’s whereabouts while they were contagious to understand the possibility of further infections. DCHD will notify parents of children who had close contact with the patient and others who may have been exposed. Close contact is considered one or more times when she spends an extended period of time with a contagious person who spreads germs through coughing. Clinics in Nebraska will be held Saturday and Sunday to test children under 4 who may have been exposed. DCHD will also be holding a clinic at the YMCA from November 15th to 17th. The disease progresses rapidly. Therefore, DCHD said this case would be treated a little differently if it involved only adults.
