Like many people on Thursday, Dr. Carrie Steiner received news that another Chicago police officer had taken his own life.
Steiner is a former Chicago police officer who also runs a first responder wellness center, helping police officers struggling with mental health.
At an unrelated press conference Thursday morning, Mayor Lori Lightfoot addressed the news.
“When you know someone is struggling, it’s important not to ignore it,” said Lightfoot.
Seven police officers have died by suicide since January 1, according to the Chicago Police Department. According to Steiner, officers deal with a host of thorny issues, including consistent witnessing of violence, portrayals of their profession in the media, and feeling undersupported. “I think most of the police officers in Chicago feel betrayed by the organization and don’t feel support from higher ups or the mayor. It’s the biggest predictor,” Steiner said.
Zion police officer Matt Thornton considered suicide nearly a decade ago, but said a spiritual awakening saved him. He said that’s why he works with other officers to help them achieve a certain level of mental stability.
Dr. Steiner said the community could better help police officers by being more empathetic about the dangerous jobs they face.
“If we want officers to be more responsible, if we want officers to be more respectful, we have to respect them and support their work.
