DNA testing in Mason helps patients find mental health medications faster

by Universalwellnesssystems

Mason, Ohio – Finding the right medication to treat your mental health is often a frustrating game of trial and error between patients and their healthcare providers. Mason-based Genetics Company offers solutions that make processes more efficient and effective.

Steve Adkins is well aware of that frustration. In his efforts to treat depression and improve his focus, he has tried multiple medications with disappointing results.

“I really didn’t feel any benefits or changes from that,” Adkins said of his first drug attempt.

When he tried another option, the side effects were worse than the original problem.

“It gave me a side effect I didn’t really like. I didn’t really want the heart-moving pit and crazy stuff,” he said.

Steve Adkins speaks to Emily Breeding, a psychiatric nurse practitioner and owner/CEO of Woodstream Wellness.

After multiple failed attempts, Adkins found the process to be discouraged.

“That’s a bit frustrating, right? Because you’re taking that magic potion and you want everything to be better,” he said. “So, that’s just a bit of a disappointment.”

The experience is common, according to Emily Breeding, a psychiatric nurse practitioner and owner of Woodstream Wellness, which has locations in Hyde Park, Beaver Creek and Myamisburg.

“[Patients] I wasn’t even sure they wanted to pursue medication because of their mental health issues because they kept trying things and it didn’t work and everything felt like they were failing,” Breeding said.

Currently, breeding uses a different approach to patients – a DNA SWAB test called Genesight. This test analyzes how a patient’s genetics responds to a particular drug, potentially reducing the time it takes to find effective treatment.

“Testing people early on allows you to see what is most metabolized in your body based on genetics and choose your medication,” Breeding said.

This test divides mental health medication into three categories, as it must be ordered by healthcare providers. Directed use medium gene drug interactions and important gene doug interactions.

“It’s easy for prescribers to read and understand, and then they work with the patient to understand the outcome and help them develop the best treatment plan,” Breading said.

Test results will be analyzed at Mason Genesite’s lab and headquarters. Assurex Health created the tests in 2006 using patented technology approved by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Mayo Clinic.

Over 3 million people have been tested, but are not currently approved by the FDA.

The company reports that not all patients experience better results, but the study shows an overall improvement in the results.

For Adkins, the GeneSight test made a huge difference. It helped him find new medicines.

“There’s no side effects, no good outcomes, no happiness, no health, no focus,” he said.

That’s an option he hoped he knew sooner.

His advice to others struggling with mental health medication: Don’t give up.

“Don’t give up. Don’t feel something, don’t feel right, don’t be afraid to reach out and reach out. Don’t be embarrassed.
