Dignity Health Hosts “Homegrown Health” Event in Woodlands
Dr. Samel Siegel, a pediatrician at Dignity Health in Woodland, attended KCRA 3 Tuesday morning to discuss the clinic’s upcoming “Homegrown Health” events.
Brandi: Earth Day is coming up this weekend. And Dignity Health seizes the opportunity to celebrate Mother Earth while helping children learn about healthy eating. Joining me now is Dignified Health Pediatrician Dr. Samer Siegel, who is hosting this weekend’s event. thank you for using. >> THINGS FOR HAVING ME. Brandy: The event is called Homegrown Health, why did you feel the community needed it? >> Childhood obesity is a huge and growing problem . About 80% of her eighth graders who are now obese will become obese adults. We have to stress it with our parents. Brandi: You said that if the children grow themselves, they will eat fruits and vegetables. Why? >>absolutely. For example, my kids may not like the taste of the vegetables you find in the supermarket, but I encourage them to go through the process of growing vegetables from a kids plant throughout the season and eating the best vegetables they’ve ever eaten. When involved, they ask for: more. Brandi: The whole idea of being able to plant yourself and watch it grow, you can eat. Talk about what people experience on Saturdays. >> April 22nd from 10am to 1pm. If you can find your way to Costco in Woodland, that’s where we are. Distribute 1000 kinds of vegetables to children. I want to make sure everyone in the community is included. For those who live in apartments and can plant soil, prepare a bucket and soil and give it to the person who puts it on the patio. There is also a taco stand so kids can eat tacos for free. It will be a fun event for the community. Brandi: One of our anchor girlfriends loves tacos so make sure she and her son are there How do you target people Families with kids and adults too ? >> Adults too. Families should eat healthy meals together. Children and adults cannot be fed separately. Everyone needs the same meal plan. If we get 1000, we give 1000 plants and 100 weights.100 – a handful of changes in children’s lives and they think eating is healthy and nutritious. Brandi: Any advice for people who want to eat healthy, especially with kids? What would you say? >> Make a small change first. You don’t have to change everything at once. Having healthy options available is important. I try to ask my family. Make sure there are fruits or vegetables available to your child at every meal. If they don’t like broccoli for dinner, it’s okay to eat something healthy like grapes or fruit. It’s important for parents to model that. Brandi: It’s something that anyone can start with. It’s called Homegrown Health and takes place at Bronze Star Drive in Woodlands.Kids can get free vegetables and I
