When asked if his personality is reflected in his mental state, Devin Answer (transcript: Blabber Mouse): “I think it’s a positive thing. I think I’ve realised in my work how much of a sense there is of engaging with different emotions on a creative level being a sign of some kind of disorder, rather than the other way around. For me, my sensitivity to my surroundings, to the world, my family and just in general has always been very sensitive to things, and that manifests as a certain way of feeling, with a very unique character. And I think the desire to express that in music has helped my mental health in that it gives it legitimacy. I think feeling that certain emotions are forbidden for some reason, like anger or sadness or empathy, is far more harmful than recognising that they’re just part of the human experience.”

As for how he “oiled the channel”: Devin “I think in a way it’s something that happens against your will, and my conscious attempt to get out of it and stop participating in it exemplified that. And I think once I realized that it wasn’t a choice, that it was a gift, then the channel was greased after that. And the gift isn’t music or the ability to do it, it’s that life is so short. If you’re really prone to feeling things on a fundamental level, then on some level it’s like an obligation if you can find a way to get past that and stay somewhat balanced. If you can tap into that delusion and make something out of it, something that gives voice to something that people might not be able to express in the same way, then you should do it. I mean, you should make music if you can, you should make art if you can. And not do that. That’s what I realized in trying to get out of music. If you do that, it’s only counterproductive. So it’s just greased for life to just nudge me in the direction of my innocence and say, ‘Look, you’re a kid. So get over it.'”
