The advisers unanimously voted that drugs containing phenylephrine taken orally cannot be used, including: Mucinex, Sudafed, Nyquil and benadrylit has no effect on the disease it is supposed to treat.
The FDA may begin the process of removing these drugs from store shelves. This move will force manufacturers to recalibrate these products to make them more effective.
Without oral phenylephrine, customers could be forced to purchase over-the-counter liquid or spray versions of the product, or entirely new medications not included in the advisory committee’s review.
A study by researchers at the University of Florida prompted the advisory committee’s decision. Researchers petitioned the FDA to remove oral phenylephrine products based on studies that showed they were no more effective than placebo pills in subjects for relieving cold and allergy symptoms.
