(Annie Lane is closed this week. The following column was first published in 2022.)
Dear Annie:
“Numb and Lost” wrote to you about the emotional isolation that comes as a result of trauma, life challenges, and the struggle to find the right treatment. As a 37-year-old man who has had his share of difficulties in treatment and the challenges that come with it, I can relate.
In many ways, finding good treatment is a battle in itself, in addition to the battle posed by what caused you to seek treatment in the first place. It’s unfair and can make an already difficult situation seem even more hopeless, but persistence is key.
I recommend the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) as a starting point for anyone looking for help with their mental health. Provide resources tailored to the user’s location and situation. They can be found at NAMI.org.
Finding a good therapist can be a difficult journey. Take one step at a time. If you find a good one, it’s worth it. — Persistent Toddler
Dear Persistent Toddler:
You’re right that finding a good therapist can be a battle in itself. But it’s well worth it. Thomas Carlyle wrote: “Persistence, perseverance, perseverance, in spite of all obstacles, disappointments, and impossibilities, this is what distinguishes strong souls from weak souls in all things.” Thank you for your letter.
