Dear Annie:
Regarding a letter from a “crossroads parent” whose son has mental health problems and is unemployed: Advising parents to encourage their son to explore vocational rehabilitation services available to people with disabilities please. Each state has an organization under the U.S. Department of Education that can provide assessment and assistance in finding and maintaining employment for people with disabilities. Various services such as interview training, resume writing, employment support, job coaching, follow-up after employment, etc. are available free of charge.
The organization’s name varies from state to state, but it’s not hard to find. They are usually called vocational rehabilitation or similar. I am a Certified Vocational Assessor. I will assess persons with disabilities and make recommendations to such agencies for potential training or services that may help them secure employment, identify and recommend types of positions, and help appreciate any support or convenience. — Debra M.
Dear Debra M:
Thank you for sharing your expertise and providing potential resources at the federal and state level.
