Onondaga County, New York (WSYR-TV) — October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, according to the Onondaga County Health Department. More importantly, her 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer at some point in her life.
The Onondaga County Cancer Services Program (CSP) encourages anyone who has not had a mammogram or is planning to have a mammogram to call their healthcare provider.
If you don’t have health insurance, CSP can help.
CSP offers free breast cancer screening to women over the age of 40 who do not have health insurance or who have other barriers to getting screened. CSP says that if follow-up tests are required, they will also provide them.
In the early stages of breast cancer, there may be no symptoms. In that case, it may include:
- Partial lump, thickening, or swelling in the breast or armpit
- A new pain in one place that won’t go away
- non-milk nipple discharge containing blood
- pulling on the nipple or other parts of the breast
- Dimples and wrinkles on the skin of the chest
- changes in breast size and shape
- Swelling, warmth, redness, or darkening of the breast skin
- Itchy nipples and other parts of the breast, scaly sores, and rashes
According to the Onondaga County Health Department, mammograms can save lives whether you have health insurance or not.
