CrossFit Open Workout 25.2 Analysis

by Universalwellnesssystems

The second training session at the 2025 CrossFit Open was a repetition of 22.3. This included increased weight, pull-ups, chest-to-bar pull-ups, and bar muscle-up thrusters. Training was subject to a 12-minute time cap, and athletes who did not finish training within the time period posted scores for the number of personnel they completed.

Unlike 25.1, which had no high-skilled movements or heavy loads, 25.2 contained some challenging elements. By starting training with pull-ups, the unskilled athlete was forced to choose a scaling or foundation version. As the thruster weight increased, the movement became more difficult as the training progressed. It’s a similar story with pull-up bars, with each round demanding more advanced skills than before.

The biggest challenge of this workout was muscle-up at the bar. An impressive 17,985 women and 54,285 men were able to raise the muscles in at least one bar.

25.2 vs 22.3

This workout was last seen three years ago at 22.3. Overall, this time the results were surprisingly similar. In the lower half of the field, we see almost exactly the same distribution with slightly faster times in the top 25%.

When comparing women in the upper percentile with men, there is a much greater improvement on the women’s side. For example, women in the 90th percentile improved in 24 seconds, while men only improved in 4 seconds.

Country performance

As in week 1, there was a significant difference in participation in the training version across the toilet. The top three countries by RX’D participation rate were 90% in South Korea, 81% in Australia, and 74% in the US.

This was a rewarding training to finish within the time cap. So let’s take a look at the percentage that Athlete was able to complete the RX’D version. Korea was the top country that finished 25.2 Rx’d at 18%, Brazil was 16%, and Australia was 15%.

Departmental Training Analysis

There are many challenging elements to this workout, with fewer athletes choosing to run the RX’D version compared to 25.1. For women aged 18-34, 65% performed 25.2 as RX’D, compared to 78% of 25.1. For men aged 18-34, 86% performed 25.2 as RX’D compared to 90% of 25.1.

Departmental Training Analysis

Given the increasing difficulty of this workout, there were many sticking points that many athletes are stuck. The biggest blocker was the 157th rep, which was the muscular first bar. A total of 27% of RX’D women aged 16-54 and 11% of RX’D men aged 16-54 finished their workout with 156 reps, unable to complete the bar muscles. This is reflected in the graph below, where a large concentration of athletes runs out of time in sections with 18 thrusters.

There was also a large group of athletes who completed at least one bar’s muscles but were unable to complete all of them. On the male side, I finished my workout somewhere 15 bars muscular than within 18 thrusters.

Completed the RX’D version of this workout was extremely difficult, with only 12% of women and 21% of men completing all the reps in time.

Community Cup Layer

In the 2025 CrossFit gaming season, the Community Cup is the next step after opening. Competing in the Community Cup is based on the level received after completing and submitting all three open training scores.
