Quote of the Day
“I was shocked. I didn’t think this should have happened. I hadn’t competed for six years. It was my first in-person competition in a long time and I was going to be competing against some incredible Olympians.” – Jamie Hagiya on finding out he was in the NA West semifinals

Semifinal spotlight: Jamie Hagiya returns to Carson for surprising comeback
The last time Jamie Hagiya was in the “tennis stadium” then known as the StubHub Center, she was doing pegboard climbs and thrusters in the final event of the 2016 CrossFit Games.
Hagiya came to CrossFit like many others, as something he had to do as a former college athlete.
-
“I grew up in Southern California. I went to college at the University of Southern California. “I played basketball there and then played a little bit overseas,” Hagiya said in an interview with Morning Chalk Up.
-
“Before I hang up my basketball shoes for good, I had tried out for the Los Angeles Sparks, but I didn’t make the team, so I was running a clinic for them, and a guy came up to me and said he ran a CrossFit gym.”
The man told Hagiya that she would be good at the sport, so the following week she went to check it out, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Recall
That was in 2011, when CrossFit was still in its infancy. Hagiya qualified for regionals in her first year in 2012, but was unable to compete due to injury. She made her competitive debut in 2013, finishing fifth at the highly competitive Southern California Regionals.
-
“The first year I did it, I don’t know how I made it to the finals,” she said. “I was lined up next to Chris Clever, Becca Voight and Lindsay Valenzuela, and I was like, what am I doing here? The event also had a lunge competition, and I didn’t have any knee pads so I had to borrow some from the crowd. I didn’t know what to do, but everyone was so kind.”

Murph and the Search for Truth
Memorial Day is fast approaching in the US, a day CrossFitters can be sure to expect one workout to be programmed for them.
1 Mile Run
100 pull-ups
200 push-ups
300 air squats
1 Mile Run
This was one of the first workouts I tried when I joined a CrossFit box over 10 years ago.
It defined “elite fitness development” for me.
I have been doing this training in almost every form once a year for over 10 years.
Looking back, I think playing Murph consistently year after year has taught me one of the most valuable life lessons, and it’s probably not the one you would expect.
It taught me the importance of truth.
For most people, Murph is a community event where we all come together and remember those who have given their sweat and blood and sacrificed everything for the greater good of society.
This is a moment to suffer together and do difficult things to honor those who came before us. This is probably my favorite community event because of that, but it has also taught me so much more.
For the past decade, I’ve been carefully tracking my performance and data points, doing half-murfs, full-murfs with and without vests, murfs with and without partitions, and a few other crazy things I can’t explain here.
Built tougher than the toughest workouts, Major Fitness barbells make a mockery of weakness. They are truly the offspring of your sweat and determination.
Perfect for fast movements, quick transitions and heavy lifting. Can withstand a weight of 750 lbsready to handle whatever you throw at it (or drop it).

Sean Gardner joins 24-hour fundraiser for veterans
After Sean Gardner retired from the Army in 2011, he wanted a way to give back to the community.
He found what he needed when he met WarriorWOD founder Phil Palmer last November.
The organization helps provide veterans with the quality of life they deserve by prioritizing their health and helping them recover from mental and physical wounds.
Gardner quickly knew this was what he was looking for and signed up as a mentor. In the WarriorWOD program, mentors are called “battle buddies,” but the term is more than just a title.
-
“In the military, you always have comrades in arms.” “You never do anything alone. There’s always someone with you for safety, accountability and all the other important things,” Gardner said in an interview with Morning Chalk Up.
