East Lansing, Michigan – Many of us Michigan State University Communities heal but don’t know how, so online retailers are stepping up.
The Coddiewomple Company will commit 100% of sales for the remainder of February to raise funds for MSU students, staff and faculty who may need mental health therapy.
The company creates apparel to end mental health stigma. In his September, Suicide Awareness Month, they designed shirts and sweatshirts that read, “Michigan needs you.” These designs take on new meaning after the deadly shooting on a college campus on Monday (February 13th).
Jacqueline Wolverton, owner of The Coddiewomple Company, said: “I mean, it’s sad that we have this. It fits this situation and should never be like that.”
The company’s name is tied to its mission.
“Coddiewomple is English slang for ‘a deliberate trip to an as-yet-unknown destination.’ This has always been my interpretation of therapy,” Wolverton said.
Wolverton said 50% of the sales will go to the Cody Wumple Foundation, a non-profit organization she founded and now heads. Organizations help cover the cost of treatment.
Wolverton has partnered with mental health clinics such as the Mara Child and Family Institute in Plymouth. Hasti Raveau, the clinic’s founder and director, believes that the cost of treatment is not just a barrier.
“It increases their stress levels and makes our overall functioning very difficult,” Labeau said. I have a family.”
After the shooting at the MSU campus on Monday (February 13th), Wolverton wanted to take action and now donate 100% of sales instead of 50% to a fund just for MSU.
“We can all come together and find real solutions. Here are ways we can help these students, faculty and staff, and the community in real life, not just in our thoughts and prayers.” Wolverton said.
Funds will be distributed to clinics in the Lansing area.
Raveau has a cousin who was on MSU’s campus when the fatal shooting happened, and the Coddiewomple Company initiative has a lot to do with it.
“On a personal level, it’s just an immense amount of gratitude that someone cares, that someone is willing to take action, and that we don’t want them to do it.” says we should never forget those who really need our care.”
Wolverton says the fund will not replace other changes she deems necessary.
“I feel lucky to use my platform to help, but the reality is that this needs to stop and this sweatshirt doesn’t have to be on point,” Wolverton said.
