Groundbreaking Partnership Connects Patients in Rural Central New York with Advanced Care in Manhattan
Bassett Medical Center in Central New York today announced the expansion of its digital health capabilities to include cardiovascular clinical services in a groundbreaking initiative with Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Through digital technology, Bassett patients can connect directly with a variety of cardiovascular specialists in Manhattan. This innovative partnership builds on her 90-year partnership with Columbia as a teaching hospital and medical college campus and Bassett.
This initiative puts Bassett and Colombia at the forefront of advancing rural and digital healthcare. Doctors in Columbia are seeing Bassett’s patients from their downstate offices, assisted by nurses in Bassett’s office. This includes health screenings using live video and electronic stethoscopes, allowing doctors to remotely listen to heart and lung sounds.

Bassett Medical Center offers a three-year cardiology training program for medical students. Columbia-Bassett Cardiac Fellows spend up to two months a year rotating in Columbia specifically to round out their experience in advanced heart failure, left ventricular assist devices, and heart transplants. Fellows are primarily based at Bassett’s Cooperstown campus and have the opportunity to complete a major rotation at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.
