A man died Tuesday after being handcuffed during a response by a mental health crisis response team, police said. He did not provide other details about his mental state.
A crisis response team, including police officers, paramedics and medical clinicians, tried to steer the man out of the driveway, but a “struggle” ensued, the department wrote in a summary on its website. became unresponsive after being handcuffed.
Medical assistance was called and the man was pronounced dead after arriving at a hospital, police said.
Police have not released detailed information about the incident, including what entailed the fight.
In accordance with departmental protocol, paramedics and police officers have taken paid administrative leave for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the incident.
Colorado Springs Police Department spokesperson Robert Tornaveen declined to comment further and referred questions to the sheriff’s office. He did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the sheriff’s office.
