Cohen, Deshmukh Selected for Second Round of CZI Funding

UNC Neuroscience Center researchers Dr. Sarah Cohen and Dr. Mohanish Deshmukh, along with Dr. Serena Young of Stanford University, have been selected to fund Phase 2 of the CZI Neurodegeneration Challenge Network.


As part of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) Neurodegenerative challenge network (NDCN) funded 16 projects in Phase 2 of its Collaborative Pairs program.in the Joint pair first phase30 labs have been funded in an 18-month pilot project to catalyze new collaborations and develop novel approaches to understanding the basic biology of neurodegenerative diseases.

Dr. Sarah Cohen and Prof. Mohanish Deshmukh, UNC School of Medicine Assistant Professors (both UNC Department of Cell Biology and Physiology and UNC Center for Neuroscience) were selected as one of 30 CZI collaborative pairs. 2020 Collaborating with Dr. Serena Young of Stanford University, the collaborators are now named as one of 16 research teams receiving a second round of funding.

Their project is entitled ‘Illuminating the dynamics of organelles in development and neurodegeneration’ and aims to use state-of-the-art imaging techniques to explore the specific brain dynamics that underlie conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. is to better visualize and understand Find out more about their project here.
