A man who has experienced mental illness twice is using his experience to help others who are facing their own battles.
These days, Barry McGovern, 43, is working tirelessly to raise awareness about mental health. She hails from Killyclogher in Co Tyrone and she now lives in Belfast where she is the manager of her The Works at Castle Court.
Barry has courageously opened up about his struggles after a traumatic teenage experience.

He told Belfast Live: 3 months as a result.
“I have always struggled with mental health, but despite all this, I have grown within myself and become a very strong person.I have a very strong family that supports me. Now it’s important to me to help others through the situations people encounter.
“It has been a lifelong ambition to try to help and inspire others by telling my story. What I can do gives me strength and hope.I can help at least one more person.”
Barry attended the Shining Light Pageant 2023 for Mental Health Awareness on April 1st at the Everglades Hotel, Delhi. In addition to raising awareness of mental health, she is raising funds for two of her charities, PIPS Suicide Prevention and Newpin Northern Ireland, to provide assistance to all those in dire need. “These charities are very close to me personally, and how the current situation in life and the financial insecurity that comes with mental health lockdowns and cost of living crises is making a difference in everyone’s lives. Both of these charities are very powerful and wonderful when you consider who you’re a part of… seek help and support,” he explained.
Barry adds: “We decided to hold a charity event at work in November to help raise funds. The staff dressed up and wore different themes each time, and the shop was decorated to match the theme.
“We held a Kings and Queens day for Women’s Aid just before Christmas, followed by an Inspire event and most recently a PIPS Robin Hood themed day this month. is backing Viking-themed PIPS suicide prevention.
“Recently, they have become very popular with the general public and other staff inside shopping centers, and they certainly get their attention.
“It definitely brightens up our work days as well as supports a good cause. We plan to continue this every month.
“Being part of Shining Light has hopefully inspired others and given me the opportunity and platform to help more people who are struggling with their own battles and mental health. ”
