University of Iowa (UI) Healthcare, Iowa UI Health Care, the only comprehensive academic health system, has deployed Nabla’s ambient AI assistant system-wide following a successful pilot. Physician wellness is more important than ever as time-consuming clinical documentation and administrative tasks disrupt work-life balance. Managing and operating EHR systems that digitize patients’ paper medical records creates a huge amount of administrative work. To address this issue, UI Health Care selected Nabla’s ambient AI technology as part of its AI strategy aimed at improving patient care, physician health, and efficiency. UI Health Care selected Nabla for a five-week pilot program and achieved a 100% adoption rate and weekly engagement score of 75% among participating clinicians. Of the 2,300 visits that utilized Nabla, caregivers achieved a clinical note rating of 4.3 out of 5. UI Health Care also saw a 26% decrease in participants’ reported rates of burnout.

Clinicians at UI Health Care using Nabla ask patients for verbal permission during the encounter. The conversation isn’t recorded; the HIPAA-compliant software simply listens using speech-to-text technology to record only the brief encounter. From this, the AI creates draft notes that clinicians can review, edit, and transfer to the patient’s medical record.
UI Health Care’s system-wide release also sees Nabla being integrated into Epic, allowing doctors to create notes with one click, without the need for manual copy-pasting. Nabla’s AI-powered features include: Magic Edit Customization capabilities streamline implementation and enhance existing workflows.
UI Health Care and Nabla will continue to work together to ensure the product is adopted and used appropriately by physicians, advanced practice providers (APPs), nurses and other clinicians across the system. The teams will create special features required by nurses and other workflows to accommodate unique clinical documentation processes.
