NORFOLK, VA – CHKD hopes to meet the critical needs of children experiencing mental health crises.
On Friday, the hospital celebrated a new multi-million inpatient care facility in Norfolk. News 3 was able to get a sneak peek inside.
The 14-story, $224 million children’s pavilion offers preventative treatments, focused day programs, research and follow-up care to address mental health needs.
The hospital has 60 inpatient beds, an indoor and outdoor recreation center, as well as a music therapy room and recording studio. Everything, from the vibrant colors and artwork, is designed to create a soothing and calming effect on the patient.
Each floor is designed to make children feel comfortable and open-minded while breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health.
Amy Sampson, senior vice president of CHKD, said: “There’s so much stigma associated with getting mental health treatment that it’s hard to see mental health facilities hiding behind trees winding down a road. “We wanted to remove some of the stigma associated with mental health treatment and remove these barriers so that we could have this beautiful building in the heart of Norfolk with these amazing views. rice field.”
From April, the outpatient treatment of the children’s house has started. The first 12 hospital beds will open on his October 11th.
All 60 private rooms will open in the middle of next year.
