The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday issued a new warning to health care providers about the serious illness of monkeypox patients.

The alert came when a monkeypox patient was reported dead in Ohio. This is his third monkeypox death in the United States.

Ohio listed the death in its update Online monkeypox outbreak dashboardNo details have been released as to whether the cause of death was the virus itself or some other illness.

“The CDC is aware of reports of deaths of individuals in Ohio who were seriously ill and tested positive for monkeypox,” said Kathleen, spokesperson for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Conley told CNN on Thursday, which has reached out to the Ohio Department of Health for more information.

First U.S. death from monkeypox confirmed this month Los Angeles CountyThe county public health department and CDC said the person had a severely weakened immune system and was hospitalized. No further information will be made public, the ministry said.

A person with monkeypox died in Harris County, Texas in August, but the role of the virus in the death has not been confirmed.

Deaths from monkeypox are very rare, and babies, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk. Of the more than 67,000 cases reported globally in the current outbreak, 27 have died, according to the World Health Organization.

More than 25,000 monkeypox cases have been reported in the United States, but recent trends in cases suggest that the epidemic in the United States is slowing.

The decline in cases may reflect an increase in the number of people vaccinated against the virus. This week, the CDC announced it would extend eligibility for the Jynneos monkeypox vaccine to high-risk people who have not been exposed to the virus.

Data released Wednesday by the CDC showed that men at higher risk of monkeypox because they had sex with other men or had HIV had more than 2 weeks if they hadn’t been vaccinated. are 14 times more likely to be infected than Missed the first dose of vaccine.

The CDC said Thursday that some people in the United States who contracted monkeypox during the ongoing outbreak have “severe symptoms” of the disease, lengthy hospital stays, or “significant” health problems.

agency’s health alerts Note that severe monkeypox can strike anyone and most people diagnosed during this outbreak have mild or moderate illness. Most seriously ill people have HIV with “substantial immunosuppression,” says the report.

Serious illnesses include:

  • Adhesions or necrotic lesions requiring extensive surgical treatment or limb amputation
  • Lesions in sensitive areas such as the mouth, urethra, rectum, and vagina that cause severe pain and affect daily life
  • Intestinal lesions with significant swelling leading to obstruction
  • Lesions that cause scarring with “significant” effects in areas such as the genitals, intestines, and face
  • Involvement of multiple organ systems and related conditions such as encephalitis, myocarditis, conjunctivitis, and corneal ulcers

The recommendation urges health care providers to be aware of the risk factors for severe monkeypox and states that anyone with suspected or confirmed monkeypox should be tested for HIV. Health care providers should also check to see if the person’s immune system has been weakened by another condition or drug.

Treatment of monkeypox in people with weakened immune systems includes discontinuing drugs that can affect the immune system, providing antiretroviral therapy to people with HIV, and sometimes Tpoxx. This includes using drugs such as Tecovirimat, which is used for

The CDC says people who contract monkeypox through sexual contact should be tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
