A case of bird flu has been detected in Maricopa County, state officials said Monday.
The Arizona Department of Health Services announced that a backyard flock of poultry in Maricopa County has tested positive for avian influenza.
Samples taken from the poultry were tested and confirmed to contain the highly contagious disease on November 21st.
Owners reported signs of illness in their flock and utilized the Sick Bird Hotline, which facilitates a quick and efficient response to stop the risk of spread.
“ADHS is working with AZDA and local health departments on the avian influenza response and will continue to work with local health departments to monitor influenza activity in Arizona. Risk to the general public remains low. However, workers and individuals who may be at risk should follow public health guidance regarding exposure to avian influenza,” said Nicole Witt, ADHS Deputy Director of Preparedness.
Officials said the infected areas have been placed under quarantine and efforts are underway to eliminate the virus.
Earlier this month, authorities reported that avian influenza was detected at a commercial poultry farm in Pinal County. Officials said the farm was placed under quarantine and enhanced measures were taken to eliminate the virus.
