Health economist Dr. Carey Colla is highly regarded for her research examining health system performance and the effectiveness of payment and delivery system reforms, and is the author of Susan J. Levy and Richard M. Levy’s 1960 Health Care Delivery He was appointed Distinguished Professor in the department.
Mr. Cora’s faculty appointment will be as a professor in the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice at the Geisel School of Medicine. She will take over the Levy Professorship from Amber Barnato, MD, MSc, MPH, who currently serves as the John E. Wennberg Distinguished Professor of Health Policy and Clinical Practice and Director of the Dartmouth Institute.

The Susan J. and Richard M. Levy Distinguished Professor position is an interdisciplinary effort to accelerate the transformation of U.S. health care and health systems by developing strategies to contain costs while ensuring quality care and access. He aims to further Geisel’s mission by leading the company. The Distinguished Professorship is named in honor of Richard (Dick) Levy (’60) and his late wife Susan. Dartmouth Academic Cluster Initiative.
“I am truly grateful to Susan and Dick Levy for this opportunity to lead the Levy Academic Cluster in Health Economics and Policy,” said Cora. “Having the support of the Leaveys, along with the university, in thinking about important policy issues and their impact on patients is critical to our success.”
As part of his leadership role in developing the new Levy Academic Cluster, Cora is hiring and mentoring two new junior faculty who will help establish the Center for Health Policy at Dartmouth. The center supports policy makers with evidence-based research in areas such as: rural health, health equity, and population health.

The Levy Academic Cluster will also leverage the ongoing efforts of the Levy Academic Cluster. Susan & Richard Levy Healthcare Delivery Incubator– A joint initiative between Dartmouth College and the Dartmouth Health Department that brings together a multidisciplinary team of researchers and frontline health care providers to improve patient care.
Like Levy, Cora is a Dartmouth graduate who graduated from the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy with a major in economics and a minor in public policy. She began her postdoctoral career as an assistant professor at Dartmouth College in 2010.
Mr. Cora now returns to Dartmouth after two years leading the Health Analytics Division at the Congressional Budget Office in Washington, DC. She previously participated in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellows Program and worked at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation. In 2020, Cora was named an Emerging Leader in Health and Medicine by the National Academy of Medicine.
Colla plans to continue teaching health economics and policy to undergraduate and graduate students.
