New board will recognize cardiology as evolving into its own medical specialty
Washington, September 21, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Many of the nation’s most prominent cardiovascular organizations representing tens of thousands of physicians are uniting today to pursue the creation of a new Commission for Cardiovascular Medicine. The proposed new board would be independent of the American Board of Internal Medicine, where the cardiology certification process currently exists. The American College of Cardiology (ACC), Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA), Heart Rhythm Society (HRS), and Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) are jointly submitting a new board application. Consortium members will participate.
Other cardiovascular organizations, including the American Heart Association (AHA), applaud this vision and are collaborating to develop the application. Formal support from the AHA is pending and is subject to formal review and consideration by his AHA Board of Directors at its next scheduled meeting.
“The time has come to create our own dedicated cardiology board. Cardiology is a unique medical specialty, and physicians want clinical competencies and continuing certification programs that are meaningful to their practices and patients. and we deserve it,” the ACC president said. B. Hadley Wilson, MD, FACC. “We recognize that the cardiovascular community is ready to establish an independent, self-governing organization, and we are proud to launch this new board with cardiologists and heart disease organizations taking the lead. I think so.”
The consortium will jointly submit an application to the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) asking the independent Board of Cardiovascular Medicine for a new competency-based approach to continuing certification: knowledge required for cardiovascular medicine; We plan to ask them to pursue approaches that utilize skills and attitudes. Maintain professional excellence and effectively care for cardiovascular patients. ABMS remains the only organization widely recognized by the public, regulators, and payers for initial and continuing physician certification in the United States. The new board will replace the “maintain certification” approach with a path to continuous certification and competency, providing diplomats with convenience, support and support for the learning physicians are currently undertaking to keep their knowledge and skills at the highest level. Selection and evaluation.
“The priority of this proposed new board is to ensure that the requirements provide real benefit to the cardiac community and the patients we serve,” said the HFSA president. john tierlink, MD, FHFSA. “The new Board’s focus on the ability to pursue continued certification is a needed paradigm shift in this field, and we look forward to future collaboration with the consortium in submitting applications.”
The field of cardiology has evolved into a complex specialty distinct from internal medicine, and maintaining relevant ongoing certifications and competency assessments is fundamental to providing high-value care. The new board requirements de-emphasize timed, high-stakes performance exams in the continuing certification process and instead include recommendations for continuing medical education (CME) learning resources and activities, The focus will be on learning assessment to identify gaps in knowledge and skills. Help fill in the gaps. Importantly, the new committee will be developed and overseen by physicians dedicated to the field of cardiovascular medicine. Transparency in board operations will be a key priority.
“SCAI is excited to work with other cardiovascular societies to bring the appropriate standards and transparency needed to certification requirements in cardiovascular medicine,” said the SCAI President. george dangus, MD, PhD, MSCAI. “As the premier society representing interventional cardiology, we are committed to ensuring we create a simplified process that addresses evolving trends in continuing education and other increasing demands on physicians in today’s healthcare environment. We are committed to.”
The application approval process is expected to take several months. If approved by ABMS, it will take several more months for initial certification, continuing certification and competency programs to begin.
“The field of cardiology and the subspecialty of cardiac electrophysiology have evolved dramatically over the past several decades,” said the HRS president. Jody L. Hurwitz, MD, FHRS. “Now is the time to provide our nation’s medical members with an innovative approach to maintaining professional qualifications that assesses the true clinical competency of our nation’s diplomats and physicians, along with associated educational support.” The time has come to establish a society.”
