Last year, the U.S. homelessness rate hit an all-time high. The crisis is at its worst in California. More people live outdoors in California than anywhere else in the United States. California Governor Gavin Newsom is pushing a series of reforms aimed at reducing homelessness, including CARE, a new type of court to help people with serious mental health issues. Court is also included. The governor has been touting CARE Court as a solution to homelessness on local and national news. But Anna Scott, a Southern California reporter who has covered homelessness for KCRW, has noticed a gap between how these courts are marketed and reality.Today is sunday storyAisha Lascoe and Anna Scott explore how this policy experiment in California can help us understand the causes of homelessness and solutions to it.
