Balance is key, so why not enjoy a cold beer after your workout? After all, that’s what Burlington Beer His Runners is all about.
Since January 2023, Beer Runners have been meeting weekly at Nickel Brook Brewery on Mainway to get some exercise and then socialize over a cold beer. We welcome participants of all levels, with some runners bringing their dogs along while others choose to walk.
“We’ve tried to keep it as casual as possible,” said Beer Runners organizer Mallory Welch. “I myself am not always able to attend due to work commitments, but I have told people that they are always available. There are no promises, but we have a pretty good regular clientele.”
Welch added that her husband, Zach, will lead the group on days she is unable to attend.
There are as many as 10 people in the group, which meets every Thursday night, and the core four meet regularly and do their best to attend all meetups. This group focuses more on making sure each member has a good time rather than intensive training.
“Sometimes, especially as people come more often and get to know the route, they speed forward,” Welch said. “Sometimes we split into two groups. If there are new people, I follow them so they don’t get lost along the way.”
Runners meet at the Mainway Brewery and begin their descent down the road through neighborhood trails. The 5-kilometre loop takes runners straight back to the brewery, where employees have water and beer ready.
“We always find a good spot for everyone to set up chairs, and it’s even better in the summer because we can open up the patio,” Welch said.
Welch added that while runners tend to choose Nickelbrook’s selection of IPAs, the brand’s Paloma beer is a standout favorite at the club these days, making it a refreshing option after coming home sweaty after a run. He said that.
The brewery welcomes regular groups on Thursdays, sweaty or not, and also offers discounted beer prices for runners at just $5 a beer.
Burlington Beer Runners is always looking for new members, whether you have an athletic background or are just putting your feet in your running shoes for the first time since 9th grade gym class.
“The ultimate goal is to have great social activities where people can come back to Nickelbrook and meet new people with similar interests,” Welch said.
