BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WBOY) — A Bridgeport doctor was found guilty by a jury Thursday of writing prescriptions for Adderall to some patients without a legitimate medical purpose.

David Elwood Hess, 60, was found guilty of four counts of improper prescribing and one count of destroying records. The jury also found that Hess remotely erased the iPhone after law enforcement seized it, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) press release.

“Dr. Hess prescribed recklessly and prioritized himself and his sexual desires over the well-being of his patients,” U.S. Attorney William Ihrenfeld said in a press release. “His sexual misconduct disrupted his decision-making and put his patients at great risk. Thanks to the jury’s verdict and the excellent work of investigators and prosecutors, Dr. Hess was cleared for his crimes. He will be held responsible.”

At the time of the indictment in April last year, West Virginia Medical Board Hess works at Labcorp in Bridgeport, 215 W. Main St., and said he has surrendered his medical license and controlled substance dispensing license.

Once the citation investigation is complete, Mr. Hess will be sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge Thomas Clay.

As of 3 p.m. Thursday, Hess had not been listed on the West Virginia Department of Corrections website.
