The cause of Ilya Golem’s death has yet to be revealed, but the number of deaths in bodybuilding is at an all-time high. With so many young bodybuilders dying, former eight-time Mr. Olympia Lee Haney has warned that the sport has become more dangerous in recent years. He believes that athletes are seeking a drier physique, which can lead to kidney problems and heart attacks.
Lee Haney’s warnings did not go unheeded, as Men’s Open bodybuilder Tonio Burton recently decided to withdraw from competing in the 2024 Mr. Olympia because he and his coach believe it is important to take a break from PEDs. Additionally, two-time Miss Bikini Olympia Jennifer Dorey also withdrew from the prestigious competition, citing personal commitments.
Unfortunately, the bodybuilding world is plagued by death. Recently, Brazilian bodybuilder Antonio Sousa died at the age of 26 after suffering a heart attack the night before at the Navega Open, where he had placed in the top three. A few months earlier, Neil Curry was found unresponsive in his home and announced dead. After his death, Curry’s parents asserted that steroids were the cause of his death.
Another talented bodybuilder has passed away too soon. Our condolences go out to the friends and family of Ilya Golem at this difficult time.
