The father-daughter duo, who recently qualified as mental health nurses, said it was “unrealistic” to start a new career together.
Stephen, 42, and Stevie Lee Jewell graduated within weeks and both now work at Harbor Psychiatric Hospital in Blackpool.
Jewell said it was “awesome” to do it together and support each other.
His 22-year-old daughter said she felt “very lucky to have shared this experience with my dad.”
Jewell said they were “really passionate” about helping others.
“We've both experienced poor mental health at times, and I think ultimately that's what drives us to want to help others,” he said. Told.
“People often ask me who inspired who, but I think it was a joint effort after we talked about our mutual career dreams and realized we both wanted the same thing.”
But the two Blackpool natives have each followed their own paths to their dream jobs.
Mr Jewell started working as a healthcare support worker at The Harbour, but had no previous experience working in the mental health field and had primarily worked in manual labor and as a greengrocer.
After gaining valuable experience, I took an Associate Nurse Course before completing my Accredited Nursing Degree Apprenticeship.
He said, “You are never too old.”
Although he admitted that starting a new career path so late in life could be “daunting”, he has been supported and encouraged to “chase his dreams” by his colleagues, manager and daughter. said.
He added that he “couldn't be happier” now.
Jewell, who graduated from Edge Hill University, said: “I love what I do and feel very lucky to have shared this experience with my father.
“We started our studies at the same time and have seen how hard each other has worked, so it feels special to graduate within weeks of each other.”
“I am excited about my future career and the impact I will have on people. I know I will be making a difference and helping people live better lives and reach their full potential. I love knowing, and I know my dad feels the same way.”
Jewell, who was named Apprentice of the Year last year, added: “It was great to do this together and support each other.”
Chris Oliver, chief executive of Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust, which runs The Harbour, said: “It's touching to see the passion they share. The care and compassion clearly extends to their families. It's ingrained,” he said.
“We are very fortunate to have them working with our older adult service users and I personally can’t wait to see what Stephen and Stevie Lee achieve with us in the future.”
